The Virtues of Hope

“Never Lose Hope Of Allah’s Mercy”

Allah commands us to never lose hope in His mercy and forgiveness. Even if we have committed many sins, Allah forgives all sins except that of associating partners with Him. Losing hope in Allah’s mercy is likened to disbelieving in Allah. The path to paradise involves trials and difficulties. But never lose hope! It is just a test. The path to paradise involves trials and difficulties. But never lose hope! It is just a test.  Hope is faith in Allah and the hereafter. Allah says:

“Verily, they would hasten to good deeds and supplicate to Us in hope and fear, and they were humbly submissive to Us.” (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:90)

Allah catches the attention of mankind by calling out. Life is full of highs and lows. Without exception, every person has a challenge or difficulty in their life. Losing hope in Allah’s mercy is likened to disbelieving in Allah. The believer calls on Allah in fear and hope: fear of His displeasure, and hope in His mercy and approval of us. Allah says:

“They arise from their beds and they supplicate their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend from what We have provided them.” (Surah As-Sajda 32:16)

Hope is the feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen or the feeling that events will turn out for the best. We keep moving forward with optimism because hope allows us to envisage a better future or a good outcome. The life of this world is filled with tests, trials, and tribulations but these must be faced with patience and hope. Hope that God will guide you to the best outcome.

We should be optimistic and never lose hope in the bounty of Allah:

  22. Hope answers the strong burning desires for happiness

Hope is the one thing that can help us get through the darkest of times. If you’re going through a difficult time, or need some inspiration to help guide you in your next phase of life, In fact, hope is best gained after defeat and failure, because then inner strength and toughness are produced. The difference between human hope and divine hope is the difference between worldly goods and heavenly gifts.  Allah Says:

“Wealth and children are the only adornments of the worldly life, but enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for one’s hope.” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:46)

Human hope is fragile. Through it, our life is nourished from a source that we do not possess, a source that exists only in our expectations. No matter how strong our hope is, a gap remains between what we have and what we hope for. Allah says:

“Fear a Day when you will be returned to Allah. Then every soul will be compensated for what it earned, and they will not be treated unjustly.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:281)

God has promised us that His guidance will lead us to the best outcome. The true foundation of hope is the good that we do in this life. Waking up to pray to Allah when we are tired is a sure sign of our hope in Allah’s reward. The believer calls on Allah in fear and hope: fear of His displeasure, and hope in His mercy and approval of us.

Allah Almighty says in The Holy Quran:

  • ”Allah made it but a message of hope for you, and an assurance to your hearts: (in any case) there is no help except Allah. The Exalted, the Wise.” (Surah Al-Imran, 126)
  • ”Those who rest not their hope on their meeting with Us, but are pleased and satisfied with the life of the present, and those who heed not Our Signs.” (Surah Yunus, 7)
  • ”Then, when he turned his face towards (the land of) Madyan, he said: “I do hope that my Lord will show me the smooth and straight Path.” (Surah Al-Qasas, 22)
  • ”It is He Who doth show you the lightning, by way both of fear and of hope: It is He Who doth raise the clouds, heavy with (fertilizing) rain!” (Surah Ar-Rad, 12)
  • ”For these, there is hope that Allah will forgive: For Allah doth blot out (sins) and forgive again and again.” (Surah An-Nisa, 99)

Hope guides us through the darkness, but despair will only lengthen the journey. Everything turns positive for a Muslim with such a depth of soul. Whether it be trouble or difficulty, it is Allah Who bestows them on that person. God is merciful, what we see around us every day is only one per cent of His mercy. Every time a mother holds her child or a nurse wipes the brow of a suffering patient. Allah says:

“O my people, worship Allah and hope for the Last Day and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.” (Surah Al-Ankabut 29:36)

Fear and hope support each other in disciplining the believers, Hope is sweeter and fresher than fear because its source is trust in God and the assurance of the extent of His mercy. To obey out of hope is better than obeying out of fear. The true foundation of hope is the good that we do in this life. Let us be hopeful about meeting our Lord with our worship of Him alone. Allah Says:

Only those who fear Allah among His servants are those with knowledge. Verily, Allah is Almighty and Forgiving.” (Surah Al-Fatir 35:28)

Having faith does not mean making any mistakes. Allah creates human beings to be fallible, flawed and weak. It is immediate repentance and sheltering in Allah and an intention not to repeat one’s error but to learn from one’s mistakes. Allah Says:

“Do not give up and do not be downhearted. You shall be uppermost if you are believers” (Surah Al ‘Imran, 3:139)

This is a major indicator of a Muslim’s sincerity. Allah tells us how Muslims should behave in the face of their own mistakes. May Allah make us among those who spend their lives working to please Him, and may He make us among those with bright faces, rejoicing in good news on that Day.
