God’s Mercy and Forgiveness

Allah is the Most Merciful and Forgiveness, believers should think positively. From the beginning of creation, the man was not left to face the struggles of life alone. By accepting that the authority of forgiveness lies exclusively in the hands of God, the human mind is also liberated from any superstition or strange ideas about how to remit for those sins committed. Allah says:

“When retreated the youths to the cave, and they said, “Our Lord! Grant us from Yourself Mercy, and facilitate for us [from] our affair (in the) right way.” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:10)

God invites us to observe the effects of His mercy around us. The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is, and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practice regular charity, and obey God. The most perfect and merciful of revelations was the Qur’an and the last of the prophets was Muhammad (PBUH). Allah says:

“So look at (the) effects (of the) Mercy (of) Allah, how He gives life (to) the earth after its death. Indeed, that surely He (will) give life (to) the dead. And He (is) on everything All-Powerful.” (Surah Qaf 30:50)

Islam teaches us to be merciful to the entire creation, to Muslims and non-Muslims, to friends and enemies and even to the animals. The belief in the forgiveness of God as the final authority leads the person to gain a sense of responsibility and accountability. You do not depend on the mindset that someone else will be taking care of your sins. No, you are accountable, individually, before God and as such you have this sense of trying your best in following His command.

Here are some signs of Allah’s Mercy to His Creation:

Allah takes care of us when we cannot take care of ourselves. He is making our hearts beat without us having any control of it. He wakes us up every morning after we sleep instead of making us die. Allah is taking care of us constantly in ways that we cannot number. In spite of the fact that we sin, we transgress, we do all the things that Allah has asked us not to do, we still are encompassed by His mercy, from all sides. Allah says:

“And obey Allah and the Messenger so that you may receive mercy.” (Surah Al-Imran 3:132)

slam teaches us to be merciful to the entire creation, to Muslims and non-Muslims, to friends and enemies and even to the animals. Creation itself is an expression of divine favour, mercy, and love. God invites us to observe the effects of His mercy around us. If one repents sincerely, and then follows it up with righteous deeds and beliefs, then God promises them Heaven and tells them that they will never be wronged.

Here are some ways to forgive yourself:

  • Focus on your emotions: You need to acknowledge and process your emotions. Give yourself permission to recognize and accept the feelings that have been triggered in you and welcome them.
  • Acknowledge the mistake out loud: If you make a mistake and continue to struggle with letting it go, acknowledge out loud what you learned from the mistake. You also imprint in your mind what you learned from your actions and consequences.
  • Think of each mistake as a learning experience: Reminding ourselves that we did the best we could with the tools and knowledge we had at the time, will help us forgive ourselves and move forward.
  • Have a conversation with your inner critic: Journaling can help you understand your inner critic and develop self-compassion. Make a list of the qualities you like about yourself, including your strengths and skills.
  • Get clear about what you want: If the mistake you made hurt another person, you need to determine the best course of action. One study found that forgiving ourselves for hurting another is easier if we first make amends.
  • Take your advice: Oftentimes, it’s easier to tell someone else what to do than to take our advice. You get to be the advice-giver and practice telling your friend how to move on.
  • Show kindness and compassion: If your first response to a negative situation is to criticize yourself, it’s time to show yourself some kindness and compassion.
  • Seek professional help: If you’re struggling to forgive yourself, you may benefit from talking to a professional.

God is full of love and mercy and is ever Merciful. God will not ignore the good of any person. But if He wishes to forgive any sinner, He has full freedom to do that. His mercy is unlimited and His love is infinite. We need God’s mercy and forgiveness all the time. It is wrong to assume at any time that one will find eternal salvation without the forgiveness of God.

The Mercy and Forgiveness of Allah (SWT) in the Quran, Allah Almighty says:

  • “And My Mercy encompasses everything.” (Quran 7:156)
  • “…but My mercy encompasses all things….” (Quran 7:156)
  • “Say: ‘Limitless is your Lord in His mercy….” (Quran 6:147)
  • “Whoever believes in God, God guides his heart aright.” (Quran 64:11)
  • “Obey Allah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy.” (Quran 3:132)
  • “Surely Allah is Most Gentle, Ever Compassionate to people.” (Quran 22:65)
  • “And We have not sent you (O Muhammad) except as a mercy to the worlds.” (Quran 21:107)
  • “Therefore, treat not the orphan with oppression. And do not repel the beggar.” (Quran 93: 9-10)

Mercy in Islam has a very wide meaning that includes kindness, compassion, love, tolerance, patience with people, and treating others the way we would love to be treated. Allah orders people to avoid committing bad deeds and prohibits them from unbelief, sins, rebellion, oppression, tyranny, killing and shedding blood. Allah guides people, forgives their sins, accepts their good deeds and overlooks their wrongdoings. Allah says:

“He chooses for His Mercy whom He wills. And Allah (is) the Possessor of Bounty – [the] great.” (Surah Al-Imran 3:74)

Human beings have always been selfish. We tend not to forgive others easily for their wrong deeds and let them suffer. God is not quick to judge. God gives time. He forebears and is patient to see His servant return to Him. The feeling of guilt eventually eats us up. It gets more difficult for us to survive with mental peace. Allah directly commands us to show forgiveness to our fellow human beings. Forgiving is the only way you can set yourself free from the burden of guilt you have been carrying for a long time. Allah says:

“And say, “My Lord! Forgive and have mercy, and You (are the) Best (of) those who show.” (Surah Al-Muminun 23:118)

Forgiveness is when we ultimately stop blaming others or ourselves for what we did in past, how we broke someone’s heart or betrayed someone and live in the present to create a better tomorrow. Allah has commanded that mercy be applied to everything and in every action. Verily, in Islam, mercy encompasses this world and the Hereafter, as well as humankind, animals, birds and the surrounding habitats. Islam is a faith that is flexible, lenient and merciful.
