Uniqueness of the Quran

The Quran is a unique divine Holy Book because it is the last message from Allah to mankind until the Day of Judgment. It is an everlasting challenge and a miracle from Allah to all mankind. Allah gave every prophet miracles affirming his prophethood. Miracles are proofs, which help a prophet to guide the people in his time to the path of Allah. The language in which Quran is revealed presents its highest and most perfect form of Arabic literature. It’s every word and sentence that meets the best of the criteria devised, and so does its subject matter. Allah says:

“Say: If you should love Allah, then follow me. Allah will love you and forgive you your sins, for Allah is forgiving and merciful.” (Surah Ali Imran 3:31)

A miraculous aspect of the Quran is that it is the most authentic nature of it which is an open challenge to all those who doubt its authenticity. When Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recited the Quran to the non-believers, they rejected it by saying it was something magic or something, which is created by him. Allah says:

“It is He who has sent among the illiterate a Messenger from among them, to recite His signs to them, and to purify them and to teach them the Book and the Wisdom. “ (Surah Al-Jumu’ah 62:2)

Thus, every generation of mankind sees that modern sciences are in overwhelming agreement with the scientific facts that are mentioned in the Quran. Based on this unique feature of the Quran, every human being at any time bears a witness by him-/herself that the Quran is the word of Allah (Jalla Jalaluhu), the Creator of everything. This miracle of the Quran is timeless and thus it will last until the end of time. Allah says:

“Do you order [the] people [the] righteousness and you forget yourselves, while you [you] recite the Book? Then, will not you use reason?” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:44)

The Quran is a miracle as its literary form cannot be explained via the productive capacity of the Arabic language, because all the possible combinations of Arabic words, letters, and grammatical rules have been exhausted and yet the Quran’s literary form has not been imitated. Allah says:

“A book We have sent down to thee, blessed, that men possessed of mind may ponder its signs end so remember..” (Surah Sad 38:29)

The Arabs who were known to have been Arab linguists par excellence failed to successfully challenge the Quran. It has been memorized, as a whole, by heart by many Muslims. This unique feature of the Quran occurs with the help of Allah.

The Quran is a unique divine holy book because of that approaches to the understanding of the Qur’an:

  1. Quran informed about humans and described our Lord

  29. Quranic context, knowledge, carries a great significance
  30. Quran was revealed into the heart of the Prophet (PBUH)

It is useful in this regard for each one of us to try to recall how many people who memorized an entire holy book, other than the Quran, we have met in our whole life (I literally mean memorized the entire holy book). The Quran is a stand-alone holy book. It does not need any other holy book to support or supplement its content. This is why Muslims use the Quran without referring to other holy books, which were revealed before it. Allah says:

“We have revealed to you the Reminder that you may make clear to men what has been revealed to them … “ (Surah An-Nahl 16:44)

The Quran is one complete book (volume). Its revelation was completed during the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Therefore, his death was not a sudden end to the revelation of the Quran. Muslims knew the entire Quran by heart during the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Quran is the central point of faith, and essential to the foundations of an Islamic society being the basis of its shariah, Islamic legal instructions, and law.

Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran:

  • “and say: My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.” (Quran 20: 114)
  • “And it is He who spread the earth and placed therein firmly set mountains and rivers, and from all of the fruits He made therein two mates; He causes the night to cover the day. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.” (Quran 13: 3)
  • “Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets, and Allah is ever Aware of all things.” (Quran 33: 40)
  • “So let man observe from what he was created. He was created from a fluid, ejected. Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.” (Quran 5-7: 86)
  • “Say, [O Muhammad], It has been revealed by He who knows [every] secret within the heavens and the earth. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving and Merciful.” (Quran 25: 6)
  • “But, [on the contrary], We have provided good things for these [disbelievers] and their fathers until life was prolonged for them. Then do they not see that We set upon the land, reducing it from its borders? So it is they who will overcome?” (Quran 21: 44)
  • “[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].” (Quran 2: 22)
  • “Then, do they not reflect upon the Qur’an? If it had been from [any] other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction,” (Quran 4: 82)
  • “Travel through the earth and see how Allah did originate creation; so will Allah produce a later creation, for Allah has power over all things.” (Quran 29: 20)
  • “And We have set on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with them, and We have made therein broad highways (between mountains) for them to pass through: that they may receive Guidance.” (Quran 21: 31)
  • “Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists). He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen? He has taught man that which he knew not.” (Quran 96: 1-5)
  • “And We have certainly made the Qur’an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?” (Quran 54: 22)
  • “And not absent from your Lord is any [part] of an atom’s weight within the earth or within the heaven or [anything] smaller than that or greater but that it is in a clear register.” (Quran 10: 61)
  • “Until, when they came upon the valley of the ants, an ant said, “O ants, enter your dwellings that you not be crushed by Solomon and his soldiers while they perceive not.” (Quran 27: 18)
  • “Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an and indeed, We will be its guardian.” (Quran 15: 9)
  • “Have We not made the earth as a wide expanse; And the mountains as pegs?” (Quran 78: 6-7)

No part of the Quran was missing than to be rediscovered later. No change was applied to it since the time of its revelation, and in fact, any change can be discovered easily by the many Muslims who memorized by heart. Thus, Muslims do not dig and search for old copies of the Quran in the hope to discover new verses. The Qur’an does not contradict modern science but rather, supports it. Allah says:

“He (is) the One Who shapes you in the wombs how(ever) He wills. (There is) no god except Him, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.” (Surah ‘Al-Imran 3:6)

The Quran, as a divine holy book, is protected by Allah (Jalla Jalaluhu) and thus it has been kept intact since the time of its revelation and will remain in this state until the end of time. Every generation of mankind unveils a layer or more of scientific knowledge according to the state of science in their time.  Allah stated in the Quran that He shall protect it from being lost or corrupted: Allah says:

الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ الشَّجَرِ الْأَخْضَرِ نَارًا فَإِذَا أَنتُم مِّنْهُ تُوقِدُونَ

“He, Who produces for you fire out of the green trees when behold! You kindle therewith.” (Surah Ya-Sin 36: 80)

Only Allah knows the complete and absolute meanings of each and every verse of the Quran. The Quran is the last holy book revealed from Allah to mankind as guidance and as an everlasting miracle. Since it is an everlasting miracle, then every generation of human beings reads it will discover new meanings in it according to the state of science and technology in their time, so they witness by themselves that the one who revealed the Quran is the Creator of everything.  Allah says:

“And if you are in doubt as to that which We have revealed to Our servant, then produce a chapter like it and call on your witnesses besides Allah if you are truthful.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:23)

Therefore newer and deeper levels of knowledge in the Quran will keep unfolding until the end of time. This is one of the miraculous attributes of the Quran that is not found, as far as I know, in any other book on earth. Although the Quran talks about science, it is not a book of biology or any other natural science. The Quran contains many verses describing scientific facts about the universe and life on earth is a super accurate manner. These verses serve as signs and proof that the Quran is the word of the Creator of the entire universe. Allah says:

“And your Lord is Rich (Free of all wants), full of Mercy, if He will, He can destroy you, and in your place make whom He will as your successors, as He raised you from the seed of other people.” (Surah Al-An’am 6: 133)

Now, let us read the following Quranic verses and explore SOME of the scientific meanings in them. Dear reader, who knows you may discover, for the first time ever a new scientific meaning in one of these verses if its topic happens to be in your realm of knowledge.

Following Quranic verses and explore some of the scientific meanings in them:

  • Day and night on earth: “He created the heaven and the earth with the Truth; He rolls the night over the daytime, and He rolls the daytime over the night, and He has subjected the sun and the moon, each of them running to a stated term. Verily He is The Ever-Mighty, The Superb Forgiver.” (Quran 39: 5)
  • Moon is a light, and the sun is a lamp: “And has made the moon a Noor (light) therein, and made the sun a Siraj (lamp).” (Quran 71: 16)
  • Human fingertips: “Yes, We are able to put together in perfect order the tips of his fingers.” (Quran 75: 4)
  • Sinful in front of the head: “A lying, sinful naseyah (forehead)!” (Quran 96: 16)
  • Expanding universe: “With power did We construct the heaven. Verily, We are able to extend the vastness of space thereof.” (Quran 51: 47)
  • Cattle milk comes from digested materials and blood: “And verily! In cattle, there is a lesson for you. We give you to drink of that which is in their bellies, from between Faith and blood, pure milk; palatable to the drinkers.” (Quran 16: 66)
  • Separations between water bodies: “He released the two seas, meeting [side by side]; Between them is a barrier [so] neither of them transgresses.” (Quran 55: 19-20). “And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition.” (Quran 25: 53)
  • Human embryonic stages: “And that He (Allah) creates the pairs, male and female; From Nutfa when it is emitted” (Quran 53: 45-46); “Verily, We have created man from Nutfa Amshaj, in order to try him: so We made him hearer and seer.” (Quran 76: 2); “He is Who created you from dust, then from a Nutfa then from an Alaqa, then brings you forth as a child …” (Quran 40: 67)
  • Hearing occurs before sight in human embryos: “It is He Who has created for you (the sense of) hearing (ears), eyes (sight), and hearts (understanding). Little thanks you give.” (Quran 23: 78)
  • Bees and honey: “And your Lord inspired the bee, saying: Take you habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they erect. “Then, eat of all fruits, and follow the ways of your Lord made easy (for you). There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying colour wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think.” (Quran 16: 68-69)
  • Reducing the land (earth): “Have they not seen that We set upon the land, reducing it from its borders? And Allah decides; there is no adjuster of His decision. And He is swift in account.” (Quran 13: 41)

A simple comparison between the Quran and the other holy books shows this aspect quite clearly. There is one version of the Quran used by Muslims since the time of its revelation. The greatness, perfection, and uniqueness of the Quran appear unambiguously when it talks about science and the creation of living and non-living things. The Quran used simple words yet it delivered lots of scientific meanings to the people in the past. Allah says:

“Alif-Lam-Mim. This is the Book (the Quran), whereof there is no doubt …” (Quran 2: 1-2)

The aspect of eternal scientific richness, depth, and power of the Quran is unmatched and does not exist, as far as I know, in any other book on earth except in the Quran. To date, Muslims and non-Muslims witness that no human being, Arab or non-Arab, has succeeded in meeting the everlasting challenge of writing even one chapter like the Quran, let alone writing an entire book like it. Also, no human being succeeded in finding errors in the Quran. Allah says:

“We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their own selves until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Quran) is the truth. Is it not sufficient in regard to your Lord that He is a Witness over all things?” (Surah Fussilat 41: 53)

The Quran’s main message is to call people to turn to the Source of all being and the Giver of life and to serve Him with a pure heart, free of idolatry or superstition. In Islam, ‘One God’ means just that: there is no concept of Trinity or anything else to complicate one’s understanding. Like the single nucleus of a cell or an atom, He Alone is the ‘control centre’ behind it all anything else would lead to chaos and confusion. Allah says:

“We have revealed to you the Reminder that you may make clear to men what has been revealed to them … “ (Surah An-Nahl 16:44)

Allah is Unique and without a partner; He was not born and did not give birth; He is All-Compassionate and Merciful, Almighty and Just, and the only One we need to turn to for guidance and help. Anything that we allow to come between ourselves and our Creator – even our own egos – is an idol. Wealth, fame, physical attraction and all the pleasures of this world will someday fade, and we will not be able to take them with us when we die. Only our faith and good deeds will remain, to light our graves and be a beacon for us on the Day of Judgment.
