The Concept of Unity in Islam

Islam means – Complete Submission to the Will of Allah. Islam is the religion of peace and harmony. It is the religion of tranquillity and brotherhood among people. Islam teaches unity which is the most important ingredient for the survival of people on this planet.  In the eyes of Allah, all Muslims are equal and no superiority is given to anyone on the basis of colour, caste, and creed. Allah says:

“ And hold firmly to (the) rope (of) Allah all together and (do) not be divided. And remember (the) Favor (of) Allah on you when you were enemies then He made friendship between your hearts you became by His Favor brothers. And you were on (the) brink (of) pit of the Fire then He saved you from it. Thus Allah makes clear for you His Verses so that you may (be) guided.” (Surah Al Imran 3:103)

Islam is a religion of peace that lays great emphasis upon mutual understanding and love among fellow Muslims. Great stress is laid upon the unity and development of brotherhood among fellow Muslim brothers. Islam is the only religion that promotes unity and solidarity among Muslims. Islamic injunctions are valuable to establish peace and security. Islam also enjoins adopting moderation in every sphere of life. Allah says:

“All who obey Allah and the apostle are in the company of those on whom is the Grace of Allah,- of the prophets (who teach), the sincere (lovers of Truth), the witnesses (who testify), and the Righteous (who do good): Ah! what a beautiful fellowship.” (Surah An-Nisa 4:69)

Religion Islam has laid great emphasis on the development of brotherhood, love, respect, and prosperity among Muslims. In the eyes of Allah, all Muslims are equal and no superiority is given to anyone on the basis of colour, caste, and creed. In Islam, we have the same prophet and we should obey Our Holy Prophet (PBUH) as well as Allah.

The Muslim Brotherhood is not based on economic interests, race or colour. It is based on something infinitely superior which is a rejection of the lie and acceptance of the truth as revealed by the One True Lord Almighty Allah. The strongest level of brotherhood is the sense of community, friendship, and common purpose in Islam for the sake of Allah. Allah says:

“They ask you about the spoils of war. Say, “The spoils of war (are) for Allah and the Messenger. So consciously revere Allah and set right that (which is) between you and obey Allah and His Messenger, if you are believers.”(Surah Al-Anfal 8:1)

The Muslim Brotherhood is the basis of a good Muslim society and making friends among Muslims paves the way for better understanding and building a better Muslim community. We should obey the holy Prophet PBUH base on Quran and there is a good reward for this action. Allah says:

“O you who believe[d]! Enter in submission/Islam completely, and (do) not follow footsteps (of) the Shaitaan. Indeed, he (is) for you an enemy open.” (Surah Al-Baqara, 2:208)

The Unity of Muslim Ummah is not in celebrating Eid on the same day throughout the World but the Unity of Ummah is in following the Quran and Sunnah of our beloved prophet Muhammad (salallahoAlaiheWasalam). If every Muslim starts following the Commands of Allah Ta’ala and His Habib Muhammad (SalallahoAlaiheWasalam) then Unity among Muslims will prevail by itself.

Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran:

  • “And perform As-Salaah (Iqaamat-as-Salaah), and give Zakah.” (Al-Baqarah 2:43)
  • “O you who believe! Observing As-Sawm (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious).” (Al-Baqarah 2:183)
  • “O, my Lord! I have power only over myself and my brother: so separate us from this rebellious people!” (Surah Al-Maida, 25)
  • “But their brethren (the evil ones) plunge them deeper into error, and never relax (their efforts).”  (Surah Al-Araf, 202)
  • “Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while); and send to the cities men to collect-” (Surah Al-Araf, 111)

Unity gives power, strength, and courage in any particular community or group and it becomes so much difficult for the external sources to crush, break or harm any individual from the united community. People feel strong and secure in those societies and networks where there are fewer conflicts and more understanding. Unity is the greatest blessing of Almighty Allah and the major element of success in every aspect of life. Allah says:

“But if they repent and establish the prayer and give the zakah, then (they are) your brothers in [the] religion. And We explain in detail the Verses for a people (who) know.” (Surah At-Taubah 9:11)

Muslims should try to ignore the little things of other Muslim brothers in order to avoid conflicts and if they face differences of opinion then they should try to negotiate the issues among each other in a very decent way. Muslims should also pray along, that may Allah save them from such disputes to have a peaceful life. Allah says:

“And for all We heirs of what (is) left (by) the parents and the relatives. And those who pledged your right hands – then give them their share. Indeed, Allah is over everything a Witness.” (Surah An-Nisa 4:33)

Being a Muslim, an individual must have empathy towards other Muslim brothers. Empathetic attitude is an important factor for the good physical and mental health of both sides. This ability to see things from another person’s perspective and empathize with another’s emotions plays a vital role in a balanced and healthy society. Allah says:

“O you who believe[d]! Be steadfast and [be] patient and [be] constant and consciously revere Allah so that you may (be) successful.” (Surah Al-Imran 3:200)

One of the greatest blessings of Islam is its admirable success in creating strong, warm, rich and durable bonds of love and brotherhood between human beings which no other religion has ever dreamed of. Islam regards all people as equal before the laws of Allah. Black and white, Arab and non-Arab, male and female, rich and poor – Islam brings them all together and addresses its commands and prohibitions to them all. May Allah help us to establish the true spirit of brotherhood by forgetting our so-called differences.
