The Quran is the primary source of Islamic Law, but it is not in a codified form. It covers all aspects of human action, e.g. moral, ritual, legal and worldly aspects. The Holy Quran itself says that it is a book of guidance. Every generation of mankind unveils a layer or more of scientific knowledge according to the state of science in their time. The Quran is thus the primary source of knowledge in Islam. Furthermore, the Book itself clarifies that it is meant to be taken as al-Furqan: the ultimate criterion between right and wrong. Allah says:
“A book We have sent down to thee, blessed, that men possessed of mind may ponder its signs and so remember.” (Surah Sad 38:29)
The Quran is a book that, by sound reasoning, bestows insight upon man. The Quran is accordingly guidance, evidence, discrimination between right and wrong and a manifest light for the people to guide them aright and help them in all their needs. Is it imaginable that it would not guide them aright in its matter, while it is their most important need? Allah says:
“With the clear proofs and the Books. And We sent down to you the Remembrance, that you may make clear to mankind, what has been sent down to them and that they may reflect.” (Surah An-Nahl 16:44)
All Results are unanimous on the point that the Holy Quran is the basis of Islamic law, thus providing the primary legislation on the Islamic legal system. Its authenticity as the source of law lies in the fact that it is the direct speech of God. All other sources derive their authenticity and validity from the Quran. God Almighty has vowed to preserve the Qur’an from all possibilities of foreign interference and corruption.

The Quran is a book of guidance and a sea of knowledge for those who take inspiration from it. While the Quran is meant to be a guide for all of humanity, regardless of creed, identity, cultural background, age, or gender, we have more potential to learn from its guidance and knowledge if we purify our hearts. Allah says:
“Alif Laam Ra. A Book which We have revealed to you, so that you may bring out mankind from the darkness[es] to the light by the permission (of) their Lord, to the Path (of) the All-Mighty, the Praiseworthy.” (Surah Ibrahim 14:1)
The Quran was written down during their lifetime and under the supervision of the Prophet, who himself was illiterate, and it was canonised shortly after his death by a rigorous method that scrutinised both written and oral traditions. It shows the right path to man by giving the accounts of the Prophets and the nations. It motivates him through parables, exhortations, and admonitions. Allah says:
“(This is) a Book We have revealed it to you, blessed, that they may ponder (over) its Verses and may be reminded of those of understanding.” (Surah Sad 38:29)
The supreme status of the Quran as a source of knowledge entails that in all matters on which the Book of Allah has given guidance — direct or indirect, specific or general — no other source can overrule it. There can always be a possibility of a difference of opinion in the understanding of the contents of the Book, but the general rule that the Quranic verdict holds supreme to all other sources of knowledge, whether religious or secular, is so unquestionable that whoever disputes it disputes the very foundation of Islam.
The Qur’an describes itself as under Allah Almighty says:
- “These are the verses of the book that make things clear.” (Quran 26:2)
- “Surely, its collection and recitation are our responsibility.” (Quran 75:17)
- “They are invited to the book of Allah to settle their dispute.” (Quran 3:23)
- “Blessed is He Who revealed the Criterion (of right and wrong) to His servant that he may be a warner for the world.” (Quran 25:1)
- “And this is a Book which We have revealed as a blessing: so follow it and be righteous, that ye may receive mercy.” (Quran, 6: 155)
- “It is indeed We Who have sent down this remembrance, and most surely We are its Guardians.” (Quran 15:9)
- “This is the book, in it is a guidance for sure without a doubt, to those who fear Allah.” (Quran 2:2)
The Quran contains all kinds of principles of creed, deeds, and ethics that will make a man attain real joy in life. The Quran is the last holy book revealed from Allah to mankind as guidance and as an everlasting miracle. The Quran describes its other function as the presentation of the Prophetic mission, which is aimed at the guidance of humanity, by delivering it from darkness and leading it towards the light. Allah says:
“And when are recited to them Our Verses (as) clear proofs said those who (do) not hope (for the) meeting (with) Us, “Bring us a Quran other (than) this or change it.” Say, “Not (it) is for me that I change it of my own accord. Not I follow except what is revealed to me. Indeed, I [I] fear if I were to disobey my Lord, (the) punishment (of) a Great Day.” (Surah Yunus 10:15)
The Quran is the unquestionably supreme source of guidance for Muslims. Its existing form is the same that the Prophet (SWS) himself had left for the followers. The difference in the present arrangement of the Book from its initial sequence of revelation is logically justifiable. Only Allah knows the complete and absolute meanings of each verse of the Quran. Allah says:
“Indeed, this, the Quran, guides to that which (is) most straight and gives glad tidings to the believers – those who do the righteous deeds, that for them (is) a reward great.” (Surah Al-Isra: 17:9)
The Quran has everything inside it related to our life, but we give more importance to the Quran only after death. If someone cannot achieve something from the Quran during his life, for sure, he will not gain anything from this book after his death either. We have selected a few chapters, like Yaseen and Rahman, which have more rewards; we read them regularly just to earn those rewards. We must try to recite the Quran daily and look over the meanings to completely understand the message of Allah.
