The Quran teaches that judgement and punishment ultimately belong to God. God demands all people show justice and mercy to all other people. Everyone should put justice first, even before
their family. It is impossible to survive in a society where there is no justice. The Quran brings across the idea that anyone who propagates the message of justice and acts accordingly will be justly rewarded with their place in Jannah.  Allah says:

وَيَا قَوْمِ أَوْفُوا الْمِكْيَالَ وَالْمِيزَانَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا النَّاسَ أَشْيَاءَهُمْ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا فِي الْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ

“And O my people! Give full measure, and weight in justice and (do) not deprive the people (of) their things, and (do) not act wickedly in the earth spreading corruption.” (Surah Hud 11:85)

It is a paradox that it is the Muslims who deny justice to their own people, while the cornerstone of the tenets of Islam is the administration of justice. The Holy Quran considers justice to be a supreme virtue. It is a basic objective of Islam to the degree that it stands next in order of priority to belief in God’s exclusive right to worship (Tawheed) and the truth of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) prophethood. Justice represents moral rectitude and fairness since it means things should be where they belong. Allah says:

وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ صِدْقًا وَعَدْلًا لَّا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَاتِهِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

“And (has been) fulfilled (the) word (of) your Lord (in) truth and justice. No one can change His words, and He (is) the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.” (Surah Al-An`am 6:115)

Justice is a central theme in the Quran, dictating the traditions of law and how they should be put into practice. There are two ways in which justice operates: in a legal sense and in a divine sense. Regarding justice in the legal sense, the Quran tells Muslims not only how to conduct themselves but is also highly important regarding relationships with other people.

Islam takes all measures to ensure that justice prevails in every field:

1. Justice denotes placing things in their rightful place
2. Justice among people instilling a concept of peace
3. Justice due reward with honour, standards, or law
4. Justice is the principle of moral rightness; equity
5. Justice tie the pillars to prevail Islamic dogmas
6. Justice means giving others equal treatment

8. Justice is just, especially a fair treatment
9. Justice is righteousness sheds light
10.  Justice is a supreme virtue
11. Justice coexists with peace
12. justice is also a moral virtue
13. Justice is a basic objective of Islam

16. justice is an attribute of human personality
17. Justice teaches us to treat each other justly
18. Justice has commanded us to be just and fair
19. Justice be moral rightness in action or attitude
20. Justice conformity to truth, fact, or sound reason

The Quran views itself as a scripture devoted mainly to laying down the principles of faith and justice. The Quran demands that justice be met for all and that it is an inherent right of all human beings under Islamic Law. The timeless commitment of the Quran to the basic standards of justice is found in its declaration. Allah commands His people to always remain just and fair even when dealing with one’s enemy. Allah says:

‏وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ صِدْقًۭا وَعَدْلًۭا ۚ لَّا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَتِهِۦ ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

“The Word of your Lord has been perfected in truth and justice. None can change His Words. And He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.” (Surah Al-An’am 6:115)

Allah detests a ruler who has bestowed with supremacy yet is ignorant of justice. The Quranic standards of justice transcend considerations of race, religion, colour, and creed, as Muslims are commanded to be just to their friends and foes alike and to be just at all levels. Allah has commanded his messengers to establish justice and spoke to them in an affirmative tone. Allah says:

فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَهُمَا بِالْعَدْلِ وَأَقْسِطُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِطِينَ

“So reconcile between them in justice and fairness. Verily, Allah loves those who are just.” (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:9)

Justice can be seen as the exercise of reason and free will or the practice of judgment and responsibility. To guide the people, Allah sent down the Prophets with clear signs, the Book, and the Balance. The Book contains the revelations that spell out what’s fair and unfair or right and wrong. From Holy Book, we can understand what is right or wrong and what Allah has commanded us.

The centrality of justice to the Quranic value system is displayed by the following verses:

• “The Believers are indeed brothers.” (Quran 49:10)
• “God loves those who judge in equity.” (Quran 5:42)
• “My Lord has commanded justice…” (Surat al-A raf, 29)
• “God commands justice and fair dealing…” (Quran 16:90)
• “… Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.” (Quran 60:8)
• “They will feel no fear and will know no sorrow. ” (Baqara, 62)
• “making them deaf and blinding their eyes.”  (Muhammad, 22-23)
• “…If you judge, judge between them with justice…” (Quran 5:42)
• “We sent Our Messengers with clear signs and sent down with them the Book and the Measure in order to establish justice among the people…” (Quran 57:25)
• “O you, who believe, be upright for God, and (be) bearers of witness with justice!” (Quran 5:8)

The concept of justice deals with the quality of soul and society. Justice towards God is also the direct consequence of being just to the self and to others. To render justice is a trust that God has conferred on the human being and, like all other trusts, its fulfilment must be guided by a sense of responsibility beyond mere conformity to set rules. Islam teaches us to be fair towards everybody even if that means going against our own self. Allah says:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَن تُؤَدُّوا الْأَمَانَاتِ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهَا وَإِذَا حَكَمْتُم بَيْنَ النَّاسِ أَن تَحْكُمُوا بِالْعَدْلِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ نِعِمَّا يَعِظُكُم بِهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ سَمِيعًا بَصِيرًا

“Verily, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Verily, Allah is ever hearing and seeing.” (Surah An-Nisa 4:58)

Islam is strongly opposed to all forms of injustice and takes all measures to ensure that justice prevails in every field. Naturally, Islam faces staunch opposition from those quarters where the vested interests want to continue their exploitation freely, without any interruption. The emphasis on justice very clearly bears out Islam’s stance on a justly balanced society, the realization of which in space and time, is the desired end of all the means at the disposal of a Muslim society. Allah says:

‘وَأَقِيمُوا الْوَزْنَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا الْمِيزَانَ

“And establish the weight injustice and (do) not make deficient the balance.” (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:9)

People in this world are unjust towards others without realizing that Allah SWT sees everything and has control over everything. Allah will surely hold the wrongdoers accountable for every inch of their injustice. Islam is a religion that supports and encourages mercy, wisdom and justice and therefore if anyone goes against these traits then he is surely going against Islam. Allah says:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَيَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ

“Verily, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and He forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.” (Surat An-Nahl 16:90)

Allah commands us in the Quran to do good and to avoid shameful deeds. Islam strongly motivates people to follow the rules and regulations set by Allah SWT and His Messenger Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as they bring us closer to Allah. If we study the cause of the ruin of many past civilizations, we find at the root the neglect of justice. In fact, justice is a value that a ruler can ignore only at his own peril. Quran concentrates on its importance and how neglecting it can lead you to darkness.
