The Role of Peace in Islam

Peace, or harmony in human relations, is a basic value of Islam. Peace is undeniably one of the greatest human needs. Peace is also a fundamental aspect of Islam. In fact, the word Islam means peace and submission. Islam encourages Peace through its fundamental ideas, which lead people to live morally upright and peaceful lives. Islam wants to see that human life can be brought about only in a peaceful environment. Inner peace lies in two major things: in serving humanity and in the remembrance of Allah. Allah says:

“So (do) not weaken and call for peace while you (are) superior, and Allah (is) with you and never will deprive you (of) your deeds.” (Surah Muhammad 47:35)

Islam is a religion that promotes the principle of spreading peace across all realms of life so that one may be tranquil in their health, wealth, relationships, and overall happiness. To truly understand the role of peace in Islam, one must look at the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The path of Islam as a religion of peace isn’t limited to personal piety; it extends to the ways Muslims interact with their communities and the wider world. Allah says:

“Those will be awarded the Chamber because they were patient and they will be met therein (with) greetings and peace. (Surah Al-Furqan, 25:75)

Islam stands for peace and desires peace. No peace, no progress; no peace, no development. Peace in Islam is not required for the sake of peace. It is required for the sake of God, that is, for the sake of a great purpose. Islam is peace. Islam wants peace for its followers and all the other residents of the world. A true Muslim is the one who truly follows Islam, someone who is at perfect peace with himself and with others.

Allah wants a Muslim to live in a safe and peaceful environment and to make efforts for the spread and continuity of peace in society for him and for all others. According to Islam, peace is not simply an absence of war. Peace opens doors to all kinds of opportunities that are present in any given situation. A true Muslim should seek to bring others close to him, not to drive them away from him.  Inner peace comes from Allah; it does not come from material things. Allah says:

“Their greetings (on the) Day they will meet Him (will be), ‘Peace.’ and He has prepared for them a reward noble.” (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:44)

Peace is not a passive state; it’s something that must be actively pursued and preserved. Islam teaches that peace starts in the heart, but must extend to how we treat others. As global citizens, embracing Islam for peace means more than just promoting tolerance; it means actively working to build bridges, heal divisions, and create spaces of safety and hope for all. Allah Says:

“When you enter houses, offer greetings of peace upon each other, a greeting from Allah, blessed and good.” (Surat al-Nur 24:59)

The Quran consists of several verses that encourage reconciliation, forgiveness, and kindness toward others. It teaches that peace in Islam is not just about the absence of conflict but also a state of well-being that promotes justice for oneself and others, tenderness when dealing with communities, and internal spiritual tranquillity. Islam is a religion of peace in the complete sense of the word. Every teaching of Islam is based on the principles of peace and avoidance. Allah says:

“When you are greeted with a greeting, then greet in return with something better or at least return it. Verily, Allah is an accountant over all things.” (Surat al-Nisa 4:86)

Peace is something that lives amongst us all, but only a few can experience it in its entirety. Islamic teachings emphasise peace at every level—between individuals, families, communities, and nations. The teachings of Islam invite people to live a peaceful life based on justice and purity. The Quran and hadiths are full of inspiring words that promote tranquillity, unity, and compassion.

Allah Almighty says in The Holy Quran:

  • “Peace, a word from a Merciful Lord.” (Surah Ya-Seen 36:58)
  • “Allah only accepts from the people of taqwa.” (Quran, 5:27)
  • “O peaceful soul, come and enter my paradise.” (Quran 89:28)
  • “We only sent you as a mercy to all the worlds.” (Quran 21:107)
  • In the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (Quran 13:28)
  • “The reward of goodness is nothing but goodness. ” (Quran 55:61)
  • “And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out.” (Quran, 65:2)
  • “So turn away from them and say, ‘Peace.” But soon they will know.” (Quran 43:89)

Islam stresses the importance of maintaining peace and harmony in all interactions. They urge Muslims to be friends of peace, to extend kindness even in the face of hostility, to remain steadfast even in the eye of a storm, and to embody humility in every interaction. It is essential to understand the principles of peace and avoidance to uphold the ideology of peace in Islam and foster a world of peaceful coexistence. Allah says:

“And if they incline to peace, then you (also) incline to it and put (your) trust in Allah. Indeed, He (is) All-Hearer, All-Knower.” (Surah Al-Anfal 8:61)

Islam is a religion in which faith is based on clear proof. It encourages people to use their God-given intelligence to think and ponder over their lives and the universe. Islam encourages a balance between hope in God’s mercy and fear of His punishment. Islam is a religion of peace in the complete sense of the word. Islah means one’s reach of peace and serenity while leaving conflicts and deviations; in other words, it refers to leaving confusion by settling a dispute between two people or two sides. Every teaching of Islam is based on the principles of peace and avoidance. Allah says:

“When you are greeted with a greeting, then greet in return with something better or at least return it. Verily, Allah is an accountant over all things.” (Surat al-Nisa 4:86)

Peace is more than the absence of war. It is also “the maintenance of an orderly and just society,” orderly in being protected against the violence or extortion of aggressors, and just in being defended against exploitation and abuse by the more powerful. We believe in a world where peace is not just possible but of utmost importance.  We should spread peace to portray the real image of religion. Muslims should respect others and try to maintain peace, and should follow the straight path.
