Importance of Helping Others in Islam

Helping the poor and needy people is a good deed and a noble aim. Helping each other is a way to overcome the grief that we may experience, and it can empower us in our worship of Allah. We should help living things that exist on this planet. Helping others is the primary highlight in Islam as the religion of peace. Help others without any selfishness; there should not be any personal interest, and whatever you do, selfishness will come back again to you when you need help. Allah says:

“Keep yourself patient with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance. Let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring adornments of the worldly life.” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:28)

Help one another in acts of piety and righteousness. Protect yourself from hellfire by giving a piece of date as charity. If you help someone, Allah helps you. Supplicating for someone is a beautiful way to aid your fellow believer. One of the more effective ways to help the poor and needy people is to give them a hand up rather than a handout. As long as you help others, Allah will help you. Allah says:

“And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He (alone) is sufficient for them. Certainly Allah achieves His Will. Allah has already set a destiny for everything.” (Surah At-Talaq, 65:3)

Helping each other is a way to overcome grief that we may experience, and it can empower us in our worship of Allah.  It is important that we remember that we must help ourselves first, whilst helping others. The Quran is not only a book of complete guidance, but it is also one of the most important texts you will ever read that will help you out of your gravest problems. Islam motivates its people to have noble morals towards people. If we are helping others, Allah promises to help us in return.

Helping others is a core principle of Islam. Here are some benefits of helping needy people:

Brotherhood is actually a faith-based community in religion. It consists of men and women as brothers and sisters. Living among a brotherhood is that kind of life full of interactions which allows us to seek or give help to others. One kind of help needed is by giving charity. Muslims need to realise the importance of helping other Muslims; otherwise, life would be wasted.  Allah says:

“You shall not attain righteousness until you spend out of what you love (in the way of Allah). Allah knows whatever you spend.” (Surah Al-Imran 3:92)

Allah doesn’t like someone who is so greedy that they are unwilling to help each other. Remember, our wealth is a blessing from Allah that we need to be grateful for. To depict our gratefulness, we need to help others instead of being greedy by keeping the wealth for our own pleasure. Indeed, Allah doesn’t like the greedy ones. Helping the poor and needy should be the prime objective of every human. Allah says:

“With (the) help (of) Allah. He helps whom He wills. And He (is) the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.” (Surah Ar-Rum 30:5)

Helping those in need and supporting those in distress is a way of thanking and praising Allah. Islam is very keen on the believer and asks him to love goodness and help others. Islam is very keen on the believer and asks him to love goodness and help others. Allah promises to be our helper if we help one another. Muslims need to realise the importance of helping other Muslims; otherwise, life would be wasted.

Allah Almighty says in The Holy Quran:

  • “Call upon your Lord humbly and in secret.” (Quran 7:55)
  • “Remembrance of Allah indeed is the greatest virtue.” ( Quran 29:46)
  • “…Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” ( Quran 13:28)
  • “Seek forgiveness of your Lord and then turn to Him in repentance.” (Hud : 3)
  • “But they plan and Allah plans and Allah is the best of planners.” (Quran 8:30)
  • “O you who believe! Fear Allah and be with those who are truthful.” (At-Taubah 9:119)
  • “Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.” (Quran 7:199)

The poor and needy people can become independent, self-sufficient and better human beings through the power of education. Through education, we can help the poor and needy people to develop their skills so that they can take over initiative to revitalise their lives rather than always depending on outsiders to do so for them. Helping those in need and supporting those in distress is a way of thanking and praising Allah. Allah says:

“And Allah knows better about your enemies and Allah (is) sufficient (as) a Protector, and sufficient (is) Allah (as) a Helper.” (Surah An-Nisa` 4:45)

Helping others is a fundamental aspect of Islam since the teaching itself promotes peace. Muslims need to realise the importance of helping other Muslims; otherwise, life would be wasted. Helping those in distress and fulfilling people’s needs indicates strong faith and sincere brotherhood. It is necessary to help a deserving person, but it is also an indecent thing that one should not do anything for oneself and depend on others. Allah says:

“Verily, those who had faith and had done righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is a great achievement.” (Surat Al-Buruj 85:11)

A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim who does not oppress him nor hand him over, and who is after the need of his brother. It is one of the principles of our faith to help our fellow human beings. When we serve the creation, we are serving Allah. May Allah allow us all to be forthcoming in helping others and being leaders in kindness, compassion and empathy, Aameen.
