Islam itself is an inherently inner peace

The Concept of Tolerance in Islam

Islam is the religion of mercy and kindness, the religion of tolerance and ease. Islam teaches tolerance at all levels: between family members, between husband and wife, between parent and child, between groups and nations. Tolerance is a basic principle of Islam. It is a religious and moral duty. It does not mean concession. It does not mean a lack of principles or a lack of seriousness about one’s principles. Sometimes it is advocated that people are tolerant of things that they do not care about. But this is not the case in Islam. Alla says:

“There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:256)

Tolerance is a basic principle of Islam. It is a religious moral duty. Muslims should always treat others with respect, kindness, and patience. Islam was revealed to make life easier and to encourage good relationships between people. In modern usage, the word “tolerance” has come to signify mutual respect and peaceful coexistence between conflicting religions and ideologies. Alla says:

“(O Muhammad) This is not a new excuse; those who weft before, they made, the same excuses. Is there anything upon the messengers except the dear conveying of the message.” (Surah An-Nahl 16:35)

Islam teaches tolerance on all levels: individual, groups, and states. Tolerance is the structure that upholds human rights, cultural diversity and the rule of law. Muslims have been generally very tolerant people. We must emphasize this virtue among us and in the world today. Tolerance is needed in our communities. In this way, e can portray the real and very good image of our religion Islam. Alla says:

“And as for My messenger, there is no (obligation) on him except to deliver (the. message). God knows what you expose and what conceal.” (Surah Al-Ma`idah 5:99)

Tolerance is a stepping stone that leads us to be good Muslims. Islam may tolerate anything but it teaches zero tolerance for injustice, oppression, and violation of the rights of other human beings. We can’t simply impose anything on them. The whole personality of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) demonstrates the implication of tolerance towards other minorities.

There are certain things in life we should tolerate like human differences, here are some ways to  be Tolerant Others:

  1. Try to start by calmly describing what you find offensive
  2. Try to care for thought and behaviour among humans
  3. Try to focus on agreeable aspects of experience
  4. Try to put aside your raw, emotional reaction
  5. Try to hold more or less incompatible views
  6. Try open-minded outlook and exposing
  7. Try to appreciate and value difference
  8. Try to remember change is imminent
  9. Try to get a better understanding
  10. Try to ignore your differences
  11. Try to become more tolerant
  12. Try to cultivate tolerance
  13. Try to address a conflict
  14. Try to honour traditions
  15. Try to accept uncertainty

  17. Tolerance upholds human rights
  18. Try to encourage self-confidence
  19. Try to analyze what happens next
  20. Try to foster your own self-esteem

  22. Try to analyze your intolerant feelings
  23. Try to promote openness and respect
  24. Try to flee from or avoid difficult thoughts
  25. Try to explain how the issue would be dealt

Sometimes you find yourself in a situation where you find it hard to tolerate someone’s actions or words. Try to understand where each person is coming from, and avoid making it into a personal battle. You can try to develop a more tolerant outlook by learning about different people, developing confidence in yourself, and coming to appreciate a difference.

“Make things easy and do not make things difficult. Give glad tidings and do not repel people. Cooperate with each other and do not become divided.” (Sahih Bukhari 2873)

We should more concentrate on this virtue of tolerance so that we can live a peaceful and happy life. Muslims have been generally very tolerant people. We must emphasize this virtue among us and in the world today. Tolerance is needed in our communities. In this way, e can portray the real and very good image of our religion Islam. Every one of human beings has a right to choose their religion and see the rights and wrongs themselves.

“Make things easy and do not make things difficult. Give glad tidings and do not repel people. Cooperate with each other and do not become divided.” (Sahih Bukhari 2873)

Islam teaches us to be kind to each other, to make peace and to spread knowledge in the most humble of ways. That’s the beauty of our God. It also means that one’s views are not to be imposed on others. We have to tolerate others according to their point of view we can’t just impose our point of view on others. If you wish to preach the religion, show them the true meaning of it. Preaching comprises the delivery of messages through kind words and actions, not force.

“May Allah have mercy on a man who is tolerant when selling, buying and seeking repayment.” (Sahih Bukhari 1970)

No doubt, Islam supports tolerance on a social level. Muslim’s concern to peacefully coincides with any group that desires peaceful coexistence. Tolerance is the gracious knot that binds the family, society and keeps the nation intact. We should impart to our children the quality of tolerance, and forgiveness because the family is the first school of privilege. We should more concentrate on this virtue of tolerance so that we can live a peaceful and happy life.

Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran:

  • “For you is your religion, and for me is my religion.” (Quran 109: 6)
  • “So, fulfil the treaty with them up to their term, surely Allah loves the God-Fearing.” (Quran 9:4)
  • “Allah does not forbid you concerning those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes from being righteous toward them and acting justly towards them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.”  (The Qur’an 60:8)
  • “O You who believe! Enter absolutely into peace (Islam). Do not follow in the footsteps of Satan. He is an outright enemy to you.” (Holy Quran: 2, 208)
  • “Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loves not transgressors.” (Al-Baqarah 2:190)
  • “Verily, they used to hasten on to do good deeds, and they used to call on us in hope and in fear” (Surah Al-Anbiyya 21 verse 90)
  • “Choose not My enemy and your enemy for allies. Do ye give them friendship when they disbelieve?” (Holy Quran: 60:1)
  • “The truth is from your Lord, so whosoever wants to let him believe and whosoever wants to let him deny” (An-Nahl 16:29)

Since it is a religion of peace, it asks its followers to be kind and merciful to everyone. On multiple occasions, hadith and Qur’an orders Muslims to care for their parents, relatives, neighbours, orphans, women, children, elderly, sick, and, in general, everyone. A point that is interesting (and contradictory to the popular belief) to note here is that the receiver of the kindness does not have to be a Muslim. Muslims must be kind to every individual, regardless of their race or religion.

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion – including all the sects, creeds, and religions – that you behave righteously with them, maintain good relations with them, and act fairly with them.” (Tafseer At-Tabari 60:8)

Islam teaches tolerance on all levels: individual, groups, and states. Tolerance is the structure that upholds human rights, cultural diversity and the rule of law. So we can say tolerance is a very important concept in Islam and specifically in business. We must emphasize this virtue among us and in the world today. Tolerance is needed in our communities. In this way, e can portray the real and very good image of our religion Islam.
